ssential oils are fragrant, powerful and highly concentrated botanicals that come from natures plants. With its uplifting and healing properties, an essential oil is a complex mixture of aromatic elements that come to produce a unique set of therapeutic qualities. There is a myriad of ways to utilize and incorporate essential oils into your life that will promote physical and emotional health and well-being.
Rosemary’s Backstory
Rosemary oil is at the top of our list. Pleasantly aromatic and extremely powerful, rosemary essential oil is known for its several benefits, which encompasses health, skin, and hair.
A perennial woody herb that belongs to the Mint family, Rosmarinus officinalis (official scientific name) is native to Mediterranean regions like Greece, Romans, Tunisia, France and so on. It is compounded of several minerals such as iron, manganese, potassium, fiber, copper, calcium, magnesium and a variety of B vitamins (pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, folates).
Rosemary’s powerful antioxidants contain rosmarinic acid, carbonic acid, ethanol acid, 1,8 cineole and camphor oil. This oil aids a multitude of concerns with its anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-cancer (Carnosol) properties. With a flawless track record, rosemary has historically been known to dramatically counter dandruff, improve hair health and mitigate hair loss.
The Nuisance of Dandruff
Dandruff is not only a nuisance but can be an embarrassing situation to deal with.
Picture this.
You see a strapping, dapper young fellow come into the coffee shop. He’s rocking a two-piece perfectly tailored suit, he’s clean, well groomed and smells fantastic. Ladies desire him and men want to emulate him. Looks like the quintessential gentleman from far. However, you get in line behind him only to find a million small white specs the size of snowflakes on his shoulder. Ugh.
You say nothing, but your mind is shouting…WTH? He doesn’t know it, but he has dandruff and probably has no clue he has it or how to get rid of it.
Not attractive is it? So, how do we deal with it?
Well, let’s first get down to the nitty-gritty of what dandruff is.
That’s the thing about this nagging little condition. We all might get it once in our life, some not ever, but for others, it comes back with a vengeance only to stay a while longer.
Dandruff is known as Seborrheic dermatitis (irritated oily skin). Candida albicans is a form of yeast that feeds off the oils of our hair follicles. What generally happens is the scalp becomes irritated and produces extra skin cells that die and shed off. The result is flaking skin. Symptoms are usually red, irritated and itchy scalp. While treating your dandruff condition might be a one-time event, for anyone who finds this a reoccurring problem, it might be beneficial to address some of the root causes that dandruff results from.
Causes
- Not brushing enough
- Yeast – Candida
- Dry Skin – changes in environment
- Not shampoo often – buildup of oil and dead skin
- Conditions – psoriasis, eczema, etc
- Stress
- Illnesses

Different Natural Methods for Hair Treatment
Here are some excellent and effective methods you could try.
Disclaimer: It is important to note that while Rosemary essential oil could be considered an allergen and has strong properties, it is highly encouraged that you perform a small patch test on the hand before you apply as a home remedy.
Based on your preferences and the time you have, there is something for everyone. I recommend choosing one method as some treatments only require to be done once a week.
Spray – In a small clear 50ml empty spray bottle fill it with rose water and about 4 drops of Rosemary essential oil. Spray your roots and scalp daily before you head out the door.
Shampoo – Apply 4-5 drops of Rosemary essential oil to any 100ml bottle of natural shampoo.
Rinse – This is a great option to try after every shampoo in the shower. Create rinse at least 2 hours before shower or day before.
Keep this rinse by the shower. Remove all shampoo from your hair. Apply the rinse slowly starting at the scalp and then massage it in.
Here is what you need.
Ingredients:
•4 cups water
•3 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
•5 drops Rosemary essential oil
•Nettle leaf/tea bag
Directions:
1. Bring water to boil in a large pot and remove from heat
2.Cool and then add vinegar, Nettle and Rosemary essential oils
3. Pour into a glass jar and stir. Let sit for at least 2 hours (Leaving it overnight is also recommended)
4.When ready to use, remove tea bag, pour a little over your hair and massage into your scalp
5. Rinse with cool water
Hot Oil Treatment – Cult favorite. Rosemary oil infused with other oils is an excellent at-home and intensive remedy for dandruff or hair loss and is best done as an overnight treatment. It’s recommended to use Coconut oil, Castor oil, or a mixture of Almond oil and Avocado oil. For every 1tsp of oil, apply 2 drops of Rosemary essential oil. To maximize this treatment, consider incorporating Tea Tree oil as it will increase the healing and soothing effects on the scalp.
You could place the mixture in the palm of your hands or in a tiny jar. It’s best to apply the oil with your fingertips directly onto the scalp. Massage the oil in when finished.
The best part about this treatment is that considering Rosemary oil is excellent for memory and mood, massaging directly on your head as a treatment before you go to bed at night will do wonders for your head in more ways than you expected. Talk about a perfect combination.
When looking to purchase your Rosemary oil, it’s highly recommended to focus on brands like Allpa that are high quality, 100% natural, pure and ethically sourced.
